The Holiday Weekend Was No Picnic for Those Hurt in a Shuttle Bus Crash at O’Hare Airport

The Labor Day holiday weekend is a busy weekend for travel in the Chicago area, and it got off to a rocky start on Friday, August 29, 2014, at approximately 6:30 a.m., when at least 15 people were hurt in a shuttle bus accident near Chicago O’Hare International Airport.

What it Was Like Immediately After the Crash

According to the Chicago Police Department, the bus crashed into the median on Interstate 190, near Terminal 1. Preliminary reports of the accident scene indicate that several people were seriously hurt. At least 10 ambulances were called to the scene of the shuttle bus accident to take the victims to Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center, Swedish Covenant Hospital, and Loyola University Medical Center. Of the 15 people injured:

Four people were reported to be in critical condition
Five people were reported to be in fair to serious condition
Four people were reported to be in good condition
Two people refused treatment at the accident scene

The passengers who were sitting near the front of the bus may have been among those who were most seriously hurt. The bus driver was reportedly pinned inside the vehicle and rescued by an airport employee and firefighter who witnessed the crash.

Traffic was significantly impacted by this bus accident, and some people were forced to walk to their airport terminals.
